QUIZ: Nearly 70% of U.S. plants say they run lean. What share say they've fully hit their lean goals?

Lead Tight. Land Right.
The system behind how I run your operation

We’ve all been there. A bad delivery month or a customer escalation kicks off an improvement push. There's a kickoff meeting, a whiteboard full of ideas, maybe a fancy slide. Six weeks later the floor is back to firefighting and every hard call still lands on your desk.

That usually isn't an effort problem. In most owner-led shops it's a sequencing problem. The team tries to fix ten things before agreeing on which two matter, and nothing in the weekly rhythm keeps a fix alive once the urgency fades. So it fades, and the operation keeps running through you.

When I step in as your fractional COO, I run the work in two parts.

I call it Lead Tight. Land Right.

LEAD Tight, LAND Right: the LEAD funnel (Locate, Evaluate, Align, Deliver) feeding a 90-day plan into the repeating LAND cycle (Launch, Assess, Normalize, Demonstrate)

Why two parts

LEAD Tight gets us tight on priorities first: a real baseline and a short list, not a wish list. LAND Right then lands those priorities in repeating 90-day cycles, so improvement becomes how the operation runs instead of a project that ends.

Skip the first part and your team gets busy on the wrong things. Skip the second and you get a good plan that never sticks.

My first weeks in your seat

Locate. I get on the floor and into your meetings, numbers, and handoffs to learn how the operation really runs day to day.

Evaluate. I size up throughput, quality, delivery, and people against what A&D customers and primes expect, and find where you're losing time, margin, or trust.

Align. You and I agree on the few operating priorities that matter most, and your leaders know who owns what.

Deliver. I hand you a 90-day operating plan with owners, targets, and a weekly rhythm to run it.

LAND Right
Running the plan with your team, 90 days at a time

Launch. I stand up the weekly operating cadence and scoreboard and start the first fixes with your leads.

Assess. We work root causes on the floor and test changes before we commit to them.

Normalize. What works becomes standard work, with clear owners and metrics, so the operation runs well without you or me in the room.

Demonstrate. We review results against the targets, then set the priorities for the next 90 days.

Then the ring turns again. Each cycle starts from a better baseline, with priorities set by what the last cycle actually proved, not by whoever yelled loudest that week.

Why it matters

An operation that runs on clear priorities, a weekly cadence, and standard work, instead of on the owner's memory, is a better business to own. It delivers more predictably. It gives you your time back. It's worth more if you ever decide to sell.

And it's exactly what A&D customers and primes are looking for when they decide who gets the next program: a supplier whose performance doesn't depend on one person being in the building. Whether you're already in defense work or trying to get in, that's the bar.

Let's talk

If improvement keeps stalling in your shop, or you want to win defense work and know the operation isn't ready, let's have a conversation about where LEAD Tight would start for you. Reply to this email, or reach me at [email protected]. More at lineshift.us

Answer: 2%.

Another 24% reported significant results, which leaves about three in four not making good progress. Starting isn't the hard part. Making it stick is. That's what LAND Right is built for.
